Welp, this life’s a strange one. Just as my fiance and I were getting life back on track and hanging out on Substack and social media again, the universe hit us with a massive curve ball. Despite being good tenants of many years and on good terms with our landlords, my fiance has been exiled from her home for four months due to an unsafe neighbour, and then at the beginning of August, we were told with extreme and unhinged prejudice to vacate my apartment as well.
I won’t bore you with the details, but we have effectively lost our housing, and when you’re struggling financially on social assistance, it’s difficult to regain stability in a crisis like this. The phone call that kicked us out of my place was so sudden and violent, we actually had to call a mental health line and law enforcement, because we thought the landlord was experiencing hostile psychosis. My fiance and I have some experience with psychosis, but nevertheless the landlord made us very unsafe in that home and we haven’t been able to stay there since. We will be following up about our rights in all of this, since they have been massively violated, but we can’t do that until we have safe housing again. It really sucks, because life was just getting back on track, and we both have school in the fall.
Times like this really give you a massive education in the way our society works, and exactly why it’s so toxic. It also, fortunately, occasionally allows us to see that there are good people in the world too, both within and beyond our families and social networks, who really want the best for all of us.
Anyway, we started a fundraiser, and if you feel like helping out, it would really make a difference and we would be exceedingly grateful. Donations are really needed and greatly appreciated. If you can’t we understand—everybody is struggling right now.—but if you feel like sharing our GoFundMe link, that would help a great deal as well.
